Description

So you wish an introduction to modal testing? Fine. Back in ebook 10 we considered the resonant responses of cantilever beams such as the strobe light-illuminated cantilever beam of Video clip 31.1.1 and other simple structures.

How can modal testing help us understand the resonant responses of real structures? We will gently excite real structures (such as automobiles and aircraft) and observe (usually with the aid of a properly programmed computer) how they respond.  By “continuous” systems I mean that their properties of mass, stiffness and damping are distributed, not “lumped” as they were with the SDoF or single degree of freedom systems we studied back in ebooks 2 and 3.

We’ll commence with a very simple structure, a musician’s tuning fork, and  introduce you to modal testing.
